Are you a Lifeboat Builder?

"Lifeboat Builder" is our term for anyone who is trying to build more resilience for themselves and their community. You've noticed that the times are bumpy and are likely to get bumpier, so you are looking for effective ways to get ready for whatever might be coming our way.

You might just be starting out and want a little guidance or maybe you’re a seasoned lifeboat builder looking for a little social support.

Resilience means different things to different people. You might be focused on food security or social justice, personal transformation or social innovation. You might be working to heal the land or building deeper collaboration within your community. You're lifeboat might be urban, rural or suburban. It might be focused on a particular piece of land or it might be more of a personal network.

More important than the focus of your work, however, is how you approach it. Lifeboat Builders understand that building resilience happens simultaneously at the person, place, and community level and that we are all in this together (whether we like it or not).

More than anything, building a lifeboat is about relearning how to work well with all our relations - other people, the land and our more-than-human relations, and internally with all the "people on the bus within us."

Good Lifeboat Builders can:

  • Live by the Principles of Sociocracy 3.0
  • Maintain boundaries that are healthy and flexible
  • De-center their egos for the common good
  • Treat everything as an experiment
  • Work with the "both / and" of reality
  • Recognize that we are all the Blind Ones and the Elephant
  • Demonstrate responsibility, reciprocity and accountability

We are happy to work with any and all lifeboat builders provided that you can work within our Sociocracy 3.0 framework and Operating Agreements. We prioritize lifeboat builders who are ready to be actively engaged and who are working on multiple areas or overlapping areas of the Lifeboat Compass.
